Euphorbia Tortilis is a fascinating caudiciform succulent prized for its twisting, snake-like stems that emerge from a swollen base (caudex). Its unusual sculptural form makes it a standout specimen for collectors and an excellent choice for containers or succulent displays. This slow-growing species thrives in bright light and requires infrequent watering once the soil has dried completely.
LIGHT | Bright light to full sun
COLD TOLERANCE | 5°C (41°F) minimum. Protect from frost.
WATER | Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy.
SOIL pH | Neutral to slightly acidic
SOIL TYPE | Fast-draining cactus mix with at least 50% mineral material (pumice, perlite, or coarse grit).
FERTILIZER | Diluted balanced fertilizer or organic fertilizer during the active growing season.
PROPAGATION METHODS | Seeds (preferred) or stem cuttings (allow cut end to callus before planting).
HUMIDITY LEVEL | Low
ACTIVE SEASON | Spring through early fall
NOTE
Like all Euphorbias, this plant produces a milky white sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ROOTING CUTTINGS
Allow the cutting to dry and callus for several days before planting. Insert the callused end about 1 inch (2.5 cm) into a dry, well-draining soil mix. Wait 5–7 days before the first light watering, then water only after the soil has completely dried. Keep the cutting in bright, indirect light until roots develop, typically within 2–6 weeks. Gradually acclimate the rooted plant to stronger sunlight.
