Opuntia humifusa, commonly known as the Eastern Prickly Pear, is a resilient and cold-hardy cactus native to the eastern United States. This low-growing cactus forms sprawling clumps with its flat, oval pads, which are covered in small spines. In late spring to early summer, it produces vibrant yellow flowers with a red center, adding a burst of color to the landscape. Following the blooms, edible, red pear-shaped fruits appear, providing food for wildlife and interest for gardeners.

This drought-tolerant cactus thrives in well-draining soil and full sun, making it ideal for rock gardens, xeriscapes, or as a unique addition to a sunny garden bed. Opuntia humifusa is incredibly hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -20°F (-28°C), and can withstand various soil conditions, including sandy or poor soils. Its low-maintenance nature and striking appearance make it a valuable plant for gardeners looking to introduce a touch of the Southwest to their outdoor space.
